Working Out
By James | April 17, 2007
Now that I am fortunate enough to be working somewhere between part time and full time, I’m going to start working out seriously again. Almost two years ago, I managed to do pretty well. I went from a 6′0″, 150lbs weakling, to a respectable 170lbs rather athletic looking individual.
About six months ago, however, my workout frequency began to dwindle. For the last two months, I’ve been hitting the gym once every… gulp… two or three weeks. As a result, I’ve lost about 15lbs of muscle and gained about 5lbs of fat, leaving me slightly stronger, slightly fatter, and pretty average.
Well no more of my fitness lallygagging!
Today, I picked up my copy of Scrawny to Brawny - the book that I did so well with in years past - and flipped back to chapter one. I’ve been through all the flexibility and posture testing the book recommends and have designed a workout based on my needs.
The workouts in Scrawny to Brawny are customizable, based on your particular areas of strength, weakness, and flexibility. The Scrawny to Brawny program is split into four 4 - 6 week phases (depending on your needs), each phase builds on the last and sets different goals. The workouts are fun, different, and - my favorite - based on actual science.
The section on diet is really good too. Like the workouts, the diet is customizable. It suggests different macro-nutrient ratios for different goals, tells you how to monitor your diet, and even gives a few recipes. It also encourages specific goals, “gain weight” is not enough, you must decide to gain or lose fat and to gain or lose muscle.
My “first” workout is tomorrow.

Good for you!
I think you got the good genes, where I got the “oh my god are you trying to starve us? let’s hold onto the fat” genes. I’ve been working out 3-5x (usually 4x) a week for 10 months now and have just lost 20 pounds. Of course for some people this would be great, for me … well, I got a ways to go.
So I’m starting to pay more attention to my diet. Diet with exercise - it’s the only way.

Mine are the exact opposite. It took an incredible amount of work for me to gain 20lbs. I literally had to eat all day long. One slip and I would lose two or three pounds, and it would take a week or more to get it back!
